Gather plantain leaves from your yard or your neighbor’s yard. Wash and lay them out on a tray or screen and let them dry and dehydrate for a day or two. You want them to wilt and lose a good bit of water content but not really get crunchy dry.
After they are good and wilted, cut them up into small pieces and put into a mason jar and cover them with Olive oil, grapeseed oil, or coconut oil.
Place in a sunny window for 4 weeks. You can speed up the process if you water bath the mason jar with the leaves in the jar on a double boiler and heat the oil for 30 minutes then place it in a window for a week or so. (some heat and cool the oil several times during the day and then consider it done) I like to let it soak a good while.
After the oil is ready, place the oil in a double boiler and add beeswax a little bit at a time. Test the consistency by putting some on a spoon and put in the freezer for 5 minutes. If it is a consistency you like then you don’t need to add more beeswax. If it is to hard you can add more oil or if to soft more beeswax. Pour into containers and you have a great homemade first aid ointment (and a gift).
I like it better than most over the counter products these days.
You can add a few drops of rosemary essential oil, tea tree essential oil for added benefits right before putting in jars. You can also add lanolin, shea butter or find other combinations, but that is a great basic easy ointment that works.
